It is easy to profit in a rising market, but what happened to those who were brave or foolhardy enough to buy at the peak?
For years, making money on property was simple: you bought a house or flat, you painted the kitchen, and, hey presto, six months later it was worth £50,000 more. Alternatively, you could buy the same property, not paint the kitchen and still sell it on for the same profit (or slightly more, as you wouldn't be wasting money on the paint). In other words, regardless of what you did, the rising market would bail you out.
For thousands of people, the opportunity to make what seemed like easy money by turning developer proved irresistible. But what about those who bought in 2007, just as the market was peaking? That is the question that Sarah Beeny sets out to answer in her new television series, Property Snakes and Ladders, which starts on Channel 4 on Tuesday at 8pm.
